Why add a watermark to a PDF?
Watermarks serve several practical purposes: branding documents with a company name or logo, marking drafts as "DRAFT" or "CONFIDENTIAL" to prevent premature distribution, indicating copyright ownership on PDFs you share publicly, or deterring unauthorized printing and distribution. For tracking purposes, consider also using the PDF Fingerprint tool to add an invisible identifier alongside the visible watermark.

Text watermark options
- Opacity — 10–100%. Most watermarks use 15–30% so the content remains readable underneath. Use higher opacity for draft marks where the watermark itself is the message.
- Rotation — diagonal (45°) is the standard for DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL marks. Horizontal works for header/footer style text stamps.
- Position — center of page, corner, or tiled pattern repeating across every page.
- Common labels — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, FOR REVIEW, DO NOT DISTRIBUTE, SAMPLE, PROPRIETARY.
Image watermark tips
Upload a PNG or JPG logo as your watermark. PNG with a transparent background works best — the transparency is preserved so the watermark blends naturally with the document background without creating a white or colored rectangle behind the logo. Use a semi-transparent PNG at low opacity for the most professional look.
Lock the watermark permanently
After adding a watermark, use Flatten PDF to merge it permanently into the page content. A flattened watermark cannot be removed by recipients using PDF editors. Combine with password protection to prevent the file from being opened in editing tools at all.
Frequently asked questions
Can the watermark be removed by recipients?
Without flattening, a technically skilled recipient could potentially remove it using a PDF editor. After flattening, the watermark is baked into the static page content and cannot be removed without re-creating the page.
Does ihatepdf add its own watermark to my watermarked PDF?
No. ihatepdf never adds any watermark of its own to any output file.
