Splitting one PDF is a common job. Splitting the same way across a whole set of PDFs is where it gets tedious: bursting every page of thirty scanned packets, cutting a folder of large reports down to email size, taking the first two pages off every application. The steps never change; only the file does.
The Split PDF tool now takes the whole set. Choose the method once and every file is split by the same rule, with each file's parts kept together in its own folder of the download. Nothing is uploaded.
How to split many PDFs at once
- Open ihatepdf.cv/split-pdf.
- Choose how to split: by pages, by size, in half, by chapter or by text.
- Select or drop all the PDFs together. With more than one file the tool switches to batch mode, with the method you chose.
- Set the details — the ranges, the size limit, the cut position, or the phrase.
- Press "Split N files". Each row shows how many parts its PDF produced.
- Download all: one ZIP, with a folder per original PDF.
Six ways to split, all in batch mode
- Page ranges. Type ranges such as
1-2, 5-; they are checked against each file, so on a 3-page file "5-" simply produces nothing. Each run of consecutive pages becomes its own file, or turn on "Combine the selected pages into one file" to get a single extract per PDF — the quick way to take, say, the first two pages of every application. - Every page. Bursts each PDF into single pages, named
report-page-01.pdf,report-page-02.pdfand so on. - By file size. Breaks each PDF into parts under a size you choose, such as 20 MB for Outlook or 25 MB for Gmail. Each part is measured after it is built, so none goes over the limit unless a single page is larger than the limit by itself.
- In half. Either cuts each PDF into two files at a point you choose, or cuts every page in two — down the middle or across — which separates the left and right pages of scanned book spreads.
- By chapter. Splits each PDF at its top-level bookmarks and names every part after its chapter. Pages before the first bookmark are kept as a "front matter" file.
- By text. Starts a new file at every page containing a phrase such as "Invoice Number", with options for matching case and whole words. Pages before the first match are kept as their own file.
The only method not available in a batch is picking pages by hand, because which pages you pick depends on each document. Use it on one file at a time.
How the download is laid out
Every PDF gets its own folder inside the ZIP, named after the file, and its parts sit inside it. Parts from different PDFs never mix, even when they would have had the same name, and sorting by name keeps them in order. Each row in the batch can also be downloaded on its own, which gives you that one PDF's parts.
Files that do not fit the rule are skipped
A folder is rarely uniform, so a file that cannot be split the way you asked is marked as skipped, with the reason, rather than stopping the batch:
- "no bookmarks" when splitting by chapter a PDF that has no outline.
- a phrase "not found" when splitting by text and no page contains it.
- "no text layer" when splitting a scan by text — scans need OCR before their words can be searched.
- "only one page" when cutting a single-page file into two files.
Batch jobs people actually run
- Bursting scanned packets into single pages for a document system that files page by page.
- Getting under an email limit: split a folder of large reports by size before sending (Gmail and Outlook limits explained).
- Separating book spreads: cut every page of a set of scanned books down the middle (splitting scanned book pages).
- Breaking exports into documents: split a set of monthly statement exports wherever "Statement of Account" appears (splitting a batch of invoices).
- Extracting chapters from a shelf of e-books or manuals with a proper outline (splitting by bookmarks).
Splitting is lossless
Splitting copies pages into new files without redrawing them, so text, images, fonts and quality are exactly as they were. The document's bookmarks do not carry into the parts, since each part is a new document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split multiple PDFs at once?
Yes. On ihatepdf.cv/split-pdf, choose a method, select or drop several PDFs and press Split. Every file is split by the same rule and you download one ZIP.
How do I split multiple PDF files into single pages?
Choose "By pages", then "Every page", and drop the PDFs. Each file is burst into one PDF per page, inside a folder named after it.
What happens to a file that does not have bookmarks?
It is skipped and marked "no bookmarks" while the rest of the batch is split. The same applies to files where a search phrase is not found.
Can I split every file at the same page ranges?
Yes. Ranges such as "1-2, 5-" are applied to each file, and pages beyond the end of a shorter file are ignored.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text and images are unchanged.
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Splitting runs in your browser and the files never leave your device.
