Two types of PDF forms — and how to fill each one
Before filling a form, identify which type you have:
- Interactive (fillable) PDF forms: These have actual form fields built in — clickable text boxes, checkboxes, dropdown menus, radio buttons. You can click directly into the fields and type. Most government forms, tax documents, and official applications are interactive.
- Non-interactive (flat) PDF forms: These look like forms but are actually just images or static PDFs with no embedded fields — scanned forms, photographed documents, or poorly prepared PDFs where someone printed a form and scanned it. You can't click into them to type.

How to fill a PDF form online free — step by step

- For interactive forms: click directly into the form fields and type your answers. Checkboxes can be checked by clicking. Dropdown menus open when clicked.

How to fill a non-interactive (scanned) PDF form
Scanned or flat forms require a different approach because there are no embedded fields to click into:
- Open the form in ihatepdf.cv/edit-pdf-text
- Select the Text Box tool from the toolbar
- Click on the area where you need to type — a text box appears
- Type your answer — adjust font size to match the form's text scale
- Move the text box by dragging it until it sits perfectly within the printed field lines
- Repeat for every field you need to complete
- For checkboxes: use the text box tool and type "✓" or "X", or draw a small shape over the checkbox
Tip: If the form is very low resolution or a photographed document, run OCR first to see if it creates a text layer that makes the form more fillable, then edit it.
How to add your signature to a PDF form
Most official forms require a signature. Three methods are available in ihatepdf's editor:
- Draw: Use your mouse or trackpad to draw your actual handwritten signature in the signature panel. On a touchscreen device (iPhone, iPad, Android), use your finger or stylus for the most natural result.
- Type: Type your name and select a handwriting-style font. This is the fastest method and is legally accepted in most jurisdictions as an electronic signature.
- Upload: Upload a JPG or PNG image of your handwritten signature (a scan or photo on white paper) and place it as an image on the signature field.
After placing the signature, resize and reposition it to sit cleanly within the signature box on the form.
Lock the form after filling — the flatten step
After completing a form that will be submitted or shared, flatten it to lock your responses so they cannot be altered:
- Download the completed form from ihatepdf's editor

- Click Flatten PDF — all form field data and your signature become permanently embedded in the page
- Download the flattened version — this is what you submit or email
A flattened form cannot have its field values changed by the recipient. This is especially important for signed contracts and official applications.
Filling government forms and visa applications
Government and immigration forms are usually interactive PDFs with real form fields. Key tips for filling them:
- Use a desktop browser rather than mobile for complex multi-page government forms — the interface is more precise
- Fill all mandatory fields (usually marked with asterisks or in red) before downloading
- If the form has a required signature date field, enter it as the final step before downloading

Privacy and security for sensitive forms
