About ihatepdf

ihatepdf is a free collection of more than 60 PDF and document tools that run in your web browser. There is no account to create, no watermark on anything you download, and no usage limit of our own.

What it is

ihatepdf covers the everyday PDF jobs — merging, splitting, compressing, editing text, signing, filling forms, redacting, encrypting, and converting to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images — alongside tools that are harder to find for free: reading a PDF aloud, transcribing a recording into a PDF, scanning documents with a phone camera, and turning typed text into handwriting.

The site is ihatepdf.cv, often written simply as ihatepdf. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with iLovePDF, Smallpdf or Adobe.

How it works

When you open a file, it is read into your browser's memory and processed there, by code the page has already downloaded: pdf.js and pdf-lib for reading and writing PDFs, WebAssembly for the heavier work, and ihatepdf's own compression and encryption engines. The result is produced on your device and saved straight to your downloads.

A few tools use machine-learning models — Kokoro for text-to-speech, Whisper for transcription, and Tesseract for recognising text in scans. Each model is downloaded to your browser the first time you use that tool, cached, and then run locally. Your document is not part of that download.

What leaves your device

For almost every tool, nothing does: there is no ihatepdf server that receives files. Three tools involve another party by design, and it is worth being exact about them.

Chat with PDF sends the text extracted from your PDF, together with your question, from your browser to Google's Gemini API. It uses an API key you supply, which is kept only in your browser, and only if you choose to save it.
P2P Share sends files directly to the person you connect with, over an encrypted WebRTC connection. The connection code is passed between you by QR code or copy and paste. Google's public STUN servers help the two browsers find a route to each other; they never see the files.
Collaborative Whiteboard sends drawing data directly to the other people in the session, over the same kind of peer-to-peer connection.

What it costs

Nothing. There are no ads, no paid tier, and no feature held back behind an account. The site is kept running by voluntary donations.

Microsoft Clarity is used to understand how pages are used — where people click, and where tools are confusing. The tool workspace is masked in those recordings, so the text of your documents is not captured.
