500KB fits most everyday documents: a multi-page scanned application, a project report with photos, an experience letter with letterhead, a set of certificates merged into one file. Scholarship, admission and many government forms use it as their per-file limit. This page opens the compressor aimed at 500KB, so it only compresses as hard as it needs to.
To compress a PDF to 500KB, set a 500KB target. On ihatepdf this page opens already set to under 500KB: add your PDF and press Compress. It tries up to six progressively stronger settings and keeps the first result under 500KB, which for most documents is the first or second step, so quality stays high. It shows the exact size and never uploads the file.
With a 500KB budget most documents do not need aggressive settings at all. The ladder starts at 150 DPI with JPEG quality 60, which halves a typical scan with no visible change on screen. Only image-heavy files reach the stronger steps. That is why a target is better than a level: the level makes you guess, and the target spends exactly the quality the limit allows.
Files that need 500KB are usually bundles: an application with its attachments, a project report with photographs, or several certificates in one PDF. Put the bundle together first with Merge PDF, remove pages you do not need with Organize Pages, and compress once at the end. Each round of compression degrades images a little, so compressing once is better than compressing each part.
When even the strongest step leaves the file over 500KB, the result is labelled "smallest possible" with an explanation of what is taking the space, such as large photographs or many pages. Removing photos you do not need, or splitting the file, will get it under; a stronger setting would only make it unreadable.
Use a target, not the strongest level. At 500KB most documents fit at 150 or 110 DPI, which looks sharp on screen and in print at normal size. This page stops at the first setting that fits, so it never compresses harder than 500KB requires.
Roughly eight to fifteen scanned grayscale pages, or four to six in colour, depending on how busy the pages are. A text PDF exported from Word can run to hundreds of pages under 500KB.
Yes. Combine them with Merge PDF, then compress the merged file here. Compressing once at the end works better than compressing each file first.
It probably contains a high-resolution photo or was scanned at 600 DPI. The first step of the ladder brings images to 150 DPI, which usually takes a page like that under 500KB straight away.
Yes. Compression runs locally in your browser; your files are never uploaded.
